Dambadeniya is a destroyed ancient city situated in the North Western Province(Wayamba] province of Sri Lanka that served as the capital of Sri Lanka in the mid 13th century. Much of Dambadeniya still lies buried on a huge fortified rock. Dambadeniya is situated about 31 km from Kurunegala, the modern day capital of the North Western (Wayamba) province. It is believed that the Dambadeniya period was the 'Golden Era' of Sinhalese Literature.

Dambadeniya Period

Dambadeniya About 30km south-west of Kurunegala, become prominent in the mid-13th century when the capital was moved there by Parakramabahu II (1236- 1270) together with the Tooth Relic. Little remains of the palace buildings though 6 ponds are still there. The 2-storey temple (originally three) about 400m south, which has Buddha images, is identified as the Vijayasundaramaya. It has some interesting wall painting dating fro the 18th century, when it was restored. It was used to exhibit the Tooth Relic which was normally housed in another temple near the palace.

How to get there

It is only 50 km away from the Colombo International Airport and by a car it takes 1 hour and by the public transport aviliable at Negombo Bus Terminal which is 7 km away from the Airport takes 11/2 hours to reach Dambadeniya.On the way to Kandy it is 20 kms away from the main road from Warakapola and from Kurunegala only 20 kms on the highway towards Negombo.

 Throughout the year Srilanka provide ideal climate for evrybody to visit as it gives climates from 10C -34 C witch could be changed in accordence with the wish of the visitors within 3 hours traveling by  a car.The lovely beaches around the country ,specially in Dambadeniya where only 50km away from Negombo beach the best time is from October to January as the calm sea provide an ideal location to enjoy. Dambaeniya located in an intermidiatory wet zone has a reasonable rainfall that gives a climate around 29C through out.The Fruit season is August/May where you could taste exotic flavours of the tropical fruits.IWe suggest April/-June/August to  September/December to January is most ideal for visitors.
